So I'm in High school with an amazing Guide Dog named Julio. Anyway, why is it that the students are great and the teachers are stupid about it. I mean, they're old enough to know better aren't they?

I think the older adults get, the harder it is for them to learn. Something about senility. Just think how great we'd be if we learned calculus as a baby!

That explains my math scores... They got worse as I went along in school.

No I suspect your math got worse because the math got harder. I don't think you'd be bothering a GD right now if your fellow student asked you to leave it alone.

Yeah, but I know better... I've been around them a lot.

If I could trust that students would be good to a gguide dog, I would get one. I think teachers at my school would be good with it, they all seem really in tune to all teh blindie stuff, thus far. The ones I have now, anyway. But the students is what i'm worried about. If I got a dog before gettign out of high school, it'd probably die of being trampled in the halls. Between my other blind friend and me, since August, we've already broken 3 canes between the two of us. That's right , 3 canes!!!! Because the school is so crowded and the darned sighties dont' wach what theyr'e doing! Caitlin

eh, sorry this is off topic but, Caitlin, is it easy to break canes? and also, are they hard to use? I really dont want to use one even though the doctor says i should... cause of crossing streets, and i have a HUGE school so yea. lol. im a little skeptical about the whole thing.... any information would be great. umm i guess this is a question for everyone.

Post 8 by Caitlin (I've now got the silver prolific poster award! wahoo!) on Sunday, 26-Dec-2004 20:12:15

Well, canes don't usually break, but if it's really crowded and certain people don't watch where they're going and step on it at an angel, it might break. You have to be careful, but usually they won't break. My high school is just really small and the people are really big hehehe. Well teh school isn't really small, but it's too small for all the people. So I wouldn't worry about getting a cane. Canes are good and not too hard to use at all, once you get the hang of it, and pretty much all you di is move it in front of you! Lol!

well, the students at my high school are so immature. I somtimes can't even use the cane beause the halls are so crouded. anyway, I think that teachers are old enough to know that these special dogs are used for a purpose. I will not get one befor getting out of high school because the environment is not safe at all. students throw trash everywhere, and they are so immature. they might feed the dog constantly and the dog will die from desease because of there fault.

I agree with Priscy, same circumstances for me. Heheh.

To add a bit of interest, today the number of canes broken between Caitlin and me has been increased to four. And the cane that broke was a specially made heavy-duty cane, too! It just goes to show you that the sighties think they're too good to watch where they're going! Nothing against the sighties on The Zone, I'm talking about the stupid, delinquentish, self-absorbed sighties that go to our school. You'd think it would kill them to watch where they're going or something. Caitlin worked out that at this rate, between the two of us, we would go through about thirty-two canes throughout our time in high school.

Omg, Doodgeman posted on teh boards? Will wonders never cease? Heheh just kidding D-Man. Anyway, yep, he's right. Derek's now broken 3 canes, including a heavy duty one, and I've broken 1. Yesterday, I walked Derek to resource (talk about the blind leading the blind), and this tough dude tried to jump over my cane, like it was a jump rope. Anyway, it was raining and he landed feet first in the grass, which was slick with mud. His feet slipped out from under him and he slid down the little hill! Hehehehhee! Our VI teacher told us about it. Lol! But Derk's right. Why can't they slow down, stop talking and getting all absorbed and watch where they're going! Our Resource teacher told us that one of the other students, who's in a wheelchair, popped tons of tires the first six months she was at our school. It hink the short and short of it is the school is kinda smallish in spots, and the population is hgue! Heh.

Yeah. I'm gladI didn't get a guide in high school. The teachers would've been ok with it, but the students would have steped on it. I only managed to brake one cane in my 4 years of high school; I bent about 3 or 4!

Are the teachers being discriminatory about it? If so then you can fight for that one.

yeah, some sighted people think they can do what ever they want when they go someware, sometimes there isn't anything better than a good whack on the legs. they will learn from things like that

First of all. You never really elaborated. What exactly is the problem with the teachers? If you give me some more info, perhaps I can help. I had a guide dog in eleventh and twelfth grade. Second, I completely understand. It does look a little stupid to use a cane, but honey would you rather be dumb looking or squashed flat on the street? I feel so stupid using a cane. I always have even though I've seen many others use them, and even though I've been using one since I was two years old. I love my guide dog so much. Using a cane after using a guide dog is like sleeping with an in-experianced twenty-five year old virgin with no creativity or aptitude for learning, after having slept with an experianced sex God. Well, at least that's what I imagine the comparison might be like. I just need a colorful analagy to use here. Third. For those of you in high school who say you wouldn't get dogs right now, that's just silly. You don't have to worry about the other students. Well, let me re-phrase that. If you are a good dog handler it won't matter what the other students do, and if you have a good bond with your dog, your dog will ignore them anyway. If you aren't, and you don't develope a strong bond then you will be screwed, whether you are in high school, college or grad. school. The students and teachers pretty much ignored my dog and I was happy with that. They asked questions, yes, but they left her alone. Oh, and as for the dog getting trampled. That's not going to happen. If anything the dog will trample them. There's nothing like a guide dog to part a huge fast moving crowd. Seriously though, I'd be glad to help any high school students with dogs or that are contemplating getting dogs.

I met this person out in public and they ask me, "How mutch can you not see?" I thought I have no clue what I can't see because I've never seen it before. how am I supposed to know?

All of my teachers in high school were very understanding about my needing space to navigate the halls between classes. They just let me leave the classroom a few minutes before the bell rang, so I would have a head start. If anyone takes up this suggestion, I hope your teachers don't take your request to leave before the bell as "special treatment".

Post 21 by Reyami (I've broken five thousand! any more awards going?) on Friday, 23-Mar-2007 0:20:34

If they do, and object to your leaving, I'd go to the administration. Teachers should not be allowed to get away with things like that.
